What happens when the Sun transits Gate 42 (Growth) in your design.
Transit Gate 42: Growth in Human Design
When a transit activates Gate 42 — Growth in your chart, the universe temporarily hands you a pair of pruning shears and a watering can at the same time. Something is asking to expand and to finish. The 42nd Gate, seated in the Sacral Center, carries the genetic pulse of completion. In transit, it does not arrive quietly. It arrives in the body, in the gut, in the unmistakable pressure to do, finish, or begin again.
The Core Theme: Increase Through Completion
Gate 42 is the first gate in the Channel of Maturation (42–53), the circuitry that takes what is started and brings it to a meaningful close so a new cycle can begin. While Gate 53 in the Root Center is about "super-abundance" and the urge to start, Gate 42 is the completion half — the side that knows when something has had enough. The I Ching hexagram behind it is called Yi, Increase, and its image is of wind over thunder: a force that quietly multiplies what is already in motion.
In a transit, this gate amplifies anything in your life that is ready to grow — a project, a relationship, a body of knowledge, even a version of yourself. The growth is not theoretical. It is the kind that demands response, energy, and follow-through.
The Gift: Recognising the Right Moment to Finish
The high expression of Gate 42 is a clean, almost instinctual sense of timing. People with this gate defined in their chart — or activated strongly in transit — tend to know when a thing has run its course. They can feel the difference between something that still has roots pushing downward and something whose season has ended. In transit, you may find yourself unusually decisive about closing chapters, finishing drafts, or releasing commitments that no longer feed you.
This is the maturation gift: the ability to increase by letting go. Growth here is not accumulation for its own sake — it is the fertile compost of completion. What is finished feeds what comes next.
The Shadow: Overgrowth and the Hunger for More
Every transit gift has its trap, and Gate 42's shadow is the one hinted at in its very name. Growth can overgrow itself. When the energy is operating unconsciously, you may feel a gnawing sense that it is never enough — another project, another client, another iteration, another version of you. The Sacral motor whirs. The body says more.
Watch for these signatures during a 42 transit:
- Taking on new commitments before the current ones are complete.
- Confusing busyness with progress.
- Difficulty stopping, even when the gut knows it is done.
- An almost compulsive appetite for expansion that leaves relationships and health behind.
The shadow is not laziness — it is the opposite. It is the false belief that growth must be constant to be valid.
Practical Guidance for the Transit
Because Gate 42 lives in the Sacral, strategy is not mental. It is somatic. To work with this transit well:
1. Wait for response before initiating. The Sacral speaks through the body's ahh and uh-uh. Let new growth opportunities arise as a response, not as a strategy. The gate is not a starter — it is a completer and a maturer.
2. Audit what is open. List the things you began but did not finish. A 42 transit is excellent for closing them out. Each completion is a real increase, even if no one applauds.
3. *Watch the appetite for more. Notice when you reach for the next thing. Ask the body: Is this a true response, or is this hunger?* The gift requires you to distinguish between the two.
4. Let completion be generative. Resist the urge to grieve what is ending. Gate 42's increase is felt in the space that finishing creates, not in what is added on top.
5. Pair it with Gate 53 if both are touched. When the whole 42–53 channel lights up in transit, you get the full maturation cycle: the impulse to begin and the wisdom to complete. Honour both.
Working With the Transit Long-Term
Transit Gate 42 is brief, but its invitations can be acted on for weeks afterward. The completions you make during a 42 window become the soil for what the next active gate will plant. If you are in a season of your life that feels like it is asking for more — more depth, more capacity, more truth — this gate is reminding you that more arrives through finishing, not through starting.
Growth, in Human Design, is never just vertical. It is a spiral. And Gate 42 is the turn that lets the spiral continue.
