Your strategy is the most important thing in Human Design. Follow it before any decisions.
HD Tip: Strategy First
If you're new to Human Design — or you've been dabbling for a while but your life still feels like it's working against you — here's the one tip that will do more than any other: start with your Strategy, not your Authority. It's the simplest, most mechanical, most reliable part of your design, and living it correctly removes an enormous amount of pressure from everything else.
What Strategy Actually Is
Your Strategy is not a personality trait. It's not a mindset. It's the mechanical way your Type is designed to interact with the world so that life flows toward you instead of grinding you down. Ra Uru Hu often compared it to the way a sailboat is designed to catch the wind — you can fight the wind, or you can set the sail correctly. Strategy is how you set the sail.
Strategy and Authority are often taught as a pair, and they are two sides of the same coin, but they're not equal. Authority is your inner navigational instrument — it tells you what to do. Strategy is the mechanism that delivers you to the right door in the first place. Without Strategy, even the most accurate Authority signal gets drowned out by resistance, because you're initiating from a place the world wasn't designed to receive you from.
The Five Strategies at a Glance
- Generator & Manifesting Generator — To Respond. Your life force is built to respond to what's already in motion: a conversation, a job ad, a DM, a question, a person. You are not designed to chase, pitch, or push.
- Projector — To Wait for the Invitation. Your gift is the insight you have into other people and systems. The invitation is recognition — someone seeing you and asking for what you offer.
- Manifestor — To Inform. Your strategy is the only one that includes action in it. You initiate, move, start things — but you tell the people impacted what's coming, so the world doesn't slam doors in your face.
- Reflector — To Wait a Lunar Cycle (about 28 days). For the big decisions, you wait. Your design samples the lunar cycle before your aura settles on what's correct.
The Gift and Shadow of Each One
Every Strategy has a built-in feedback loop. Follow it and you taste the gift. Ignore it and you get the shadow.
- Generators responding leads to satisfaction — the deep, lit-up feeling of being used correctly. Generators who initiate feel frustration, the muscular tension that tells you your energy is being burned in the wrong gear.
- Projectors waiting for the invitation leads to success — the recognition economy of being valued. Projectors who push themselves into rooms uninvited meet bitterness, the salty recognition that the world isn't using what you have.
- Manifestors informing leads to peace — movement without friction, the closed aura staying clear. Manifestors who don't inform create anger — both theirs and everyone else's, the resistance that has nowhere to land because nobody was warned.
- Reflectors waiting leads to surprise — the joy of being carried by life's larger rhythms. Reflectors who rush get disappointment, the quiet letdown of choosing too soon.
Why Strategy First, Not Authority
Authority is subtle. It's felt. It can take years of practice to even notice the signal clearly. Strategy, on the other hand, is behavioral — you can track it with a notebook. Did I respond, or did I chase? Did I wait to be asked, or did I pitch? Did I inform, or did I disappear and shock people?
When you start with Strategy, two things happen. First, the volume of resistance in your life drops noticeably within weeks. Second, your Authority gets quieter and clearer, because you're no longer dragging it through situations it was never designed to navigate.
A Simple Way to Practice
Pick one week. Write down every time you acted in a way that doesn't match your Strategy. Don't judge it. Just log it. Generators, note the things you initiated. Projectors, note the times you asked, pitched, or inserted yourself. Manifestors, note the moments you moved without telling anyone. Reflectors, note the big choices you made in under a day.
Then notice the result. The shadow feeling is your signal that the Strategy was bypassed. You don't have to fix anything yet. You just have to see it.
Strategy first. Everything else gets easier from there.
