The Inner Authorities in Human Design: A Complete Overview
In Human Design, the inner Authority is the body's own decision-making intelligence. It is the voice of the form, expressed through specific centers and channels, and it is the only reliable compass for correct action. Strategy tells you how to move in the world; Authority tells you whether and when. Without honoring Authority, Strategy becomes a mechanical exercise. With it, decisions become aligned with the mechanics of the body, the mind steps aside, and life unfolds in a way that is both correct and nourishing.
The Source of Authority
Authority is determined by which centers are defined in the bodygraph. Where there is consistent, reliable energy, the body can be trusted to know. Where a center is open, that area is not a place to decide from. The seven Authorities reflect the seven ways the form speaks to the conscious self.

Calculate your chartEmotional Authority (Solar Plexus)
This is the most common Authority, found in roughly half of all generators and some projectors. Defined by the Solar Plexus center, it is the authority of clarity, not of feeling alone. The emotional wave is a chemistry that moves through highs and lows. Waiting for clarity means allowing the wave to crest, fall, and return to a still, peaceful place in the middle. A decision made at the peak of emotional excitement or the depth of disappointment will be distorted. A decision made at clarity is correct.
Sacral Authority
The Sacral speaks in sounds: "uh-huh," "uhn-uh," the in-the-moment yes or no. Pure generators with the Sacral connected directly to the Throat operate this way. Sacral Authority is immediate. It is not for long-term planning but for responding in the now. When asked a question, the Sacral responds before the mind has time to build a story. The discipline lies in staying open to be asked, and trusting the body's first response rather than the mind's second opinion.
Splenic Authority
The Spleen is the oldest, most instinctive awareness center. It speaks once, quietly, and in the present moment. Splenic Authority is about survival, health, and intuition. It favors what is correct, not what feels good. Splenic knowings are subtle: a sudden sense of danger, a flash of attraction, an instinctive knowing of whom to trust. Because the mind is fast, it often overrides the Spleen. The practice is to act in the moment of recognition, before the narrative begins.
Ego/Heart Authority
A Heart Authority governs willpower, willfulness, and the question of what is worth committing to. The mantra is simple: I want, or I don't want. This authority is not about what the mind thinks is logical, but what the Heart genuinely desires. There is an inherent risk of willpower here, the tendency to override the body's other signals with the force of the ego. The wisdom lies in using the Heart's clarity to support, not dominate, the rest of the form.
Self/G Authority
Defined by the G Center connected directly to the Throat through the Channel of Identity, this authority lives in the question of direction and identity. The Self knows where one is going, and who one is becoming. It speaks through love, direction, and the feeling of being on one's path. Decisions made from Self Authority feel like a coming home.
Mental Authority (Projected)
This is the authority of the mental projectors who do not have Emotional or Sacral definition but have a defined Ajna. They need to talk through decisions. Authority is found in the resonance of their own voice as they speak, write, or share. The mind is processed aloud. They must surrender to the process of discussion and trust the truth that emerges through the act of articulating.
Outer (Lunar) Authority
Those with no internal authority defined are guided by the lunar cycle. Authority comes not from within, but from observing the movement of life over approximately 28.7 days. Every experience during the cycle is a piece of information. The practice is to witness rather than control, to let the theme of the transit reveal the correct direction. There is no rush; the answer emerges over time.
Living with Authority
Each Authority requires its own discipline. Emotional waits for clarity. Sacral stays responsive. Splenic acts in the moment. Ego honors the truth of want. Self trusts direction. Mental processes aloud. Outer surrenders to the cycle. What unites them is the willingness to stop making decisions from the open mind, and instead to let the defined body lead. This is the path of correctness, and it is the foundation of living one's design.
