Seven Inner Authority Types: Find Your Correct Decision Strategy

Every decision you make is a vote for who you are. In Human Design, the way you are designed to make correct decisions is called your Inner Authority—a specific mechanism in your body that, when trusted, acts as a compass. It is not a belief system. It is not a strategy of the mind. It is biology, mechanics, and the intelligence of your form speaking through you.

The mistake most people make is trying to decide everything with their heads. Mental logic is powerful, but it is not personal. Your Inner Authority is. Below are the seven types and how each one actually works in practice.

The Emotional Authority (Solar Plexus)

If you have an emotional wave, you were never designed to make decisions in the moment. Your clarity comes over time. The wave moves through peaks of hope, lows of despair, and eventually lands on a quiet, factual baseline. This can take minutes, hours, or days depending on the weight of the choice.

Calculate your chart

How to use it: Sleep on big decisions. Don't sign contracts in highs or lows. Wait until you feel neither excited nor dreading—until you feel calm and clear. If you wake up the next day and the answer is the same, it is correct. Emotional authority people who try to be spontaneous sabotage themselves constantly.

The Sacral Authority

The sacral is the "gut yes, gut no" generator motor. It responds instantly with sound—"uh-huh" or "uh-uh"—or a felt sense of expansion or contraction in the belly. It does not think. It knows.

How to use it: You must be in response to life for this authority to speak. Initiating kills the signal. When something is presented to you, listen for the immediate, non-verbal response before your mind can interfere. Sacral authority is for the things that directly affect your life force—work, food, relationships, movement. Overthinking is the enemy.

The Splenic Authority

The spleen is the oldest, most instinctive awareness center. It speaks once, quietly, and in the present moment. It is about survival, health, and what is right for you now. If you hesitate or ask again, the voice disappears. It is not loud like the sacral. It is a whisper.

How to use it: Trust the first instinct on small things first. Build the muscle. Pay attention to who and what feels healthy in your body. The splenic voice often shows up as a flash of knowing, a subtle drop in energy, or a flash of "not this." If you feel sick in your body around something, the spleen has already spoken.

The Ego/Heart Authority

The ego is the willpower center, and when it is your authority, your will is reliable. You are designed to know what you want—and what you do not want. This authority moves through material things, resources, promises, and the question of whether something serves your heart.

How to use it: Ask: "Do I want this, or not?" Make decisions based on what your will truly desires, not on what others expect or what seems logical. Ego authority can be stubborn, but its stubbornness is its wisdom. When you override your want to please someone, you almost always regret it.

The Self-Projected Authority

This is the authority of a Projector who needs to hear themselves speak. The clarity comes through voicing the choice—out loud, to yourself, in your car, in the shower, on a walk. The sound of your own words is the mirror.

How to use it: Talk it out. Alone. Narrate the decision as if explaining it to a friend. You will hear, within your own voice, where the truth is. The tone shifts. The words either flow or stick. Trust the sounding. This is not seeking advice from others—that is Mental authority. This is hearing yourself.

The Mental/External Authority

Some Projectors need to talk it out with other people to find clarity. Not for advice, but to hear themselves bouncing off someone else's perspective. The correct answer often emerges in the middle of conversation, in the back-and-forth.

How to use it: Choose your sounding boards carefully. They should be people who do not project their agenda onto you. Ask open questions out loud. Notice when your words lock in. If the answer only came in conversation, it is correct. If you still don't know, you don't know—and waiting is better than forcing.

The Lunar Authority

Only those with no defined centers—true Reflectors—carry this authority. The lunar cycle is 28 days, and the moon moves through all 64 gates each month. For Reflectors, this cycle is the decision-making mechanism. Major life choices require a full lunar cycle to mature.

How to use it: For big decisions—relationships, moves, jobs—wait. Note the question on the new moon, then live with it through the full cycle. Watch who and what shows up. Track your own energy shifts. By the end of the month, the clarity will not be intellectual. It will be a deep, embodied "yes" or "no." Impatience is the Reflector's main suffering.

Putting It All Together

Knowing your authority is one thing. Using it is another. The practice is simple but not easy: stop deciding from your head. Stop asking what you should do. Start asking your body. Start waiting for your wave. Start trusting the instant flash, the sound of your voice, the month of waiting.

Every time you override your authority, you generate resistance. Every time you follow it, even when it doesn't make sense to anyone else, life gets easier. Correct decisions are not always comfortable—but they are always recognizable in hindsight by their rightness.

Your authority is not a strategy you learn. It is what you remember when you finally stop trying to be something you are not.
