Explore the 64 gates and 6 lines that form the vocabulary of Human Design.
The Power of Gates and Lines
In Human Design, the BodyGraph is often described as a map, but the real terrain is made of two features: the 64 Gates and the Lines that subdivide them. Together, these tiny elements carry most of the specificity that makes a chart feel like a specific human. The Centers tell you where you have consistent energy. The Channels show where the wiring connects. The Gates and Lines are where the actual story lives.
What a Gate Actually Is
Each of the 64 Gates corresponds to one of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, the ancient Chinese text Ra Uru Hu used as the foundation for the system. A Gate is a fixed point on the BodyGraph where a particular archetypal theme - the pressure to love (Gate 55), the hunger for self-expression (Gate 12), the authority of the heart (Gate 36) - enters your energetic field.
When a Gate is defined in your chart, that theme operates consistently in you. When it is undefined, you become an open receptor for that frequency in others. This is where many people freeze, because openness is so often misread as deficiency. It is not. It is a place designed to amplify, taste-test, and learn about that energy through encounter.

Calculate your chartThe 36 Channels: Where Gates Connect
Gates rarely stand alone. A Channel forms when two Gates, sitting in different Centers, are both defined. There are 36 Channels in total, and each one represents a complete theme - the two Gates are the two ends of a single conversation between two Centers.
The Channel is the operating system. The Gates are the input and output ports. This distinction matters in practice: if you have the whole Channel defined, you have reliable access to that theme. If you only have one Gate, the theme leaks - it can fire when someone nearby activates the matching Gate, and then it goes quiet again.
The Six Lines: The Real Personality
This is where most people miss the depth. Each Gate is divided into six Lines, and the Line you were born with is far more specific than the Gate itself. Ra described the Line as "how the personality is in the world."
A quick map of the Lines:
- Line 1 - The Investigator: a need to research, study, and have a foundation before acting. Gift: thoroughness. Shadow: paralysis through endless investigation.
- Line 2 - The Hermit: natural talent that calls for retreat in order to develop. Gift: self-contained skill. Shadow: hiding.
- Line 3 - The Martyr: learns through trial, error, and bumping into things. Gift: experiential wisdom. Shadow: a felt sense that life is punishing.
- Line 4 - The Opportunist: friend-oriented and network-aware. Gift: relationships that open doors. Shadow: dependence on being liked.
- Line 5 - The Heretic: practical, magnetic to the disenfranchised. Gift: trustworthy solutions to real problems. Shadow: being dismissed as a fraud.
- Line 6 - The Role Model: the embodied elder. Gift: visible wisdom. Shadow: premature withdrawal from the world.
Your Line does not override your Type or Strategy - it colors them. A 5/1 Generator and a 6/3 Generator move through life very differently, even with identical Type and Authority.
Sub-Lines: The Sub-Texture
Each Line divides further into six Sub-Lines, drawn from the inner trigram of the hexagram. If the Line is the headline, the Sub-Line is the byline. They add timing, role, and texture, and they are especially useful in transits - a planetary Sub-Line activation can trigger a specific Line in you with uncanny precision.
How to Work With This
Gates and Lines are not affirmations. They are not goals. They are descriptions of mechanics.
A simple practice: when you find yourself strongly fixated on a Gate - either loving it or hating it - check whether it is defined in you. If it is undefined, the fixation is almost certainly coming from a defined person in your environment. That is wisdom, not malfunction. You are sampling.
If a Gate is defined, the question is not "do I have this quality?" but "do I trust it?" The gift and the shadow are the same energy under different relationships to timing. The Line 1 investigator is either a foundation or a freeze, depending on whether it is honored.
The Quiet Power
The real magic of Gates and Lines is that they take Human Design off the level of the generic and place it firmly in the personal. Centers and Types are the language. Gates and Lines are the poetry. Live
