Hexagram 19: Lin (Approach) — The Power Before the Turn

Hexagram 19 'Approach' in the I Ching. One of 64 archetypes underlying Human Design.

Hexagram 19: Lin (Approach) — The Power Before the Turn

Of all sixty-four hexagrams, Hexagram 19 captures one of the most psychologically charged moments in the cycle of change: the height of momentum just before it peaks. The English name "Approach" is a placeholder for something richer. The Chinese character 臨 (Lín) evokes the image of a person standing tall, surveying the land below — the sun high in the sky, the lake swelling against the earth. Yang energy is pouring upward. Influence is expanding. The question is what you do when your reach finally exceeds yesterday's limits.

The Structure: Lake Above, Earth Below

Hexagram 19 is composed of Dui (Lake) over Kun (Earth). The image is striking and physical: a body of water, soft and yielding, spreading outward across the solid ground. The two yang lines at the bottom are pushing upward through four yin lines, like a shoot forcing its way through soil. This is the inverse of Hexagram 24 (Return), where yin is exhausted and a single yang line returns at the base. Here, yang is the rising force — almost halfway to dominance, but not yet there.

The hexagram is the complement of Hexagram 61 (Inner Truth), and the two together describe how outward expansion must be matched by inner authenticity to last.

The Judgment: Supreme Success, With an Asterisk

The classical judgment reads: "Approach. Supreme success. Perseverance furthers. When the eighth month comes, there will be misfortune."

This is the part most readers miss. "Approach" is not permission to coast. The hexagram promises that growth is happening, influence is working, and right action will compound — but only for now. The "eighth month" is a calendar reference, not a date. It points to the moment when the same force that has been carrying you forward will begin to turn. What is hexagram 19 in summer becomes its opposite — Hexagram 36, "Darkening of the Light" — when the cycle moves on. Read this hexagram and you are reading a clock, not a contract.

The Image of the Inexhaustible Teacher

The image says: "Above the earth, the lake: the image of Approach. Thus the superior man is inexhaustible in his teaching, tireless in nurturing."

This is one of the I Ching's most practical images for anyone in a position of influence — a parent, a manager, a teacher, a friend. The lake is inexhaustible because the source keeps feeding it. Approach works when you give without rationing, when the energy you pour into others is replenished by the same source that fills you. Tiredness arrives not from giving but from giving in ways that drain — by performing rather than transmitting, by curating your wisdom instead of sharing it.

The Six Lines: How Approach Goes Right or Wrong

Line 1 — Joint Approach. Perseverance brings good fortune. Begin at the same level as those you want to reach. Don't claim altitude you haven't earned.

Line 2 — Joint Approach. Good fortune. Nothing is unfavorable. The second line continues the first: meet people where they actually are, not where you wish they were.

Line 3 — Sweet Approach. Nothing is to be gained. This is the warning line. When your influence starts to feel pleasant, when people begin to flatter you or you begin to enjoy the warmth of your own reach, the work has turned to sugar. The line counsels perseverance in righteousness to avoid regret. Comfort is the first sign that approach has stopped being service and started being self-indulgence.

Line 4 — Complete Approach. No blame. By the fourth line, the relationship is real. Influence is grounded. The cautious tone here is not because something is wrong but because the highest yang is still in motion — don't mistake momentum for arrival.

Line 5 — Wise Approach. Righteous. Has no fault. The ruler's line. Approach at this level is generous, clear, and free of self-interest. It is the hexagram's natural ideal.

Line 6 — Greathearted Approach. Good fortune. No blame. The influence is so clean that even when conditions shift, the foundation holds.

The Shadow of Approaching

Every hexagram has a shadow, and Hexagram 19's is the seduction of momentum. When things are working, we forget to ask why they are working. We begin to believe the waxing is the world rather than a season in it. The "eighth month" is not a punishment — it is the natural cost of being attached to a phase that was never meant to be permanent.

The practical advice this hexagram actually offers is simple and demanding: give freely, lead without hoarding, teach until you are tired of teaching, and — hardest of all — release the fantasy that the rising will not, at some point, begin to fall. Approach is not the same as arrival. It is the practice of being fully present in the climb.
