Human Design in English: A Complete Guide to Your Bodygraph
Human Design is a synthesis system that overlays the I Ching, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, the Hindu-Brahmin chakra model, astrology, and quantum physics onto a single chart called the Bodygraph. It was channeled by Ra Uru Hu in January 1987 on the island of Ibiza, and over four decades later it remains one of the most detailed personality frameworks in modern use.
This guide walks you through the system in plain English, the way a thoughtful friend would explain it over coffee.
The Premise: You Are Not Your Conditioning
At the foundation of Human Design is one uncomfortable idea: most of the pain in your life comes from living as a version of yourself shaped by parents, culture, fear, and expectation. Your Type, Strategy, and Authority describe the version of you that existed before all of that. The work isn't to "improve" — it is to remember.

Calculate your chartThe Five Types
Every human being in the system falls into one of five Types. Each has a reliable Strategy and a specific way of meeting the world.
- Generator (about 37% of the population) — Sustainable life force in the sacral center. Strategy: respond. Wait for things to light you up; your gut sacral "uh-huh" or "nuh-uh" is your compass.
- Manifesting Generator (33%) — Multi-passionate, fast, efficient. Strategy: respond, then inform. Get clear, take action quickly, and tell whoever is affected what you're doing.
- Projector (20%) — Built to guide, manage, and see others. Strategy: wait for the invitation. Recognition is the price of admission; without it, your wisdom often gets rejected.
- Manifestor (8–9%) — The initiator. Strategy: inform before you act. You move fast and impact others without asking permission — but a quick heads-up prevents the resistance that derails you.
- Reflector (about 1%) — Lunar, open, sampling. Strategy: wait a lunar cycle (about 28 days) before major decisions. Your gift is honest, objective reflection of the health of your community.
Centers, Gates, and Channels
The Bodygraph has nine Centers — large geometric shapes that either have a defined color (consistent, fixed energy) or are white/open (mutable, wise but vulnerable to conditioning). When two adjacent Centers share a Gate, the line of communication between them is a Channel, and you are said to have that trait as part of your fixed design.
- Gift of definition: reliability, a known way of operating.
- Shadow of openness: amplification of whatever the people around you are feeling. Open Centers are not flaws; they are places where you can become wiser about being human, provided you stop identifying with what passes through.
Authority: Your Inner Decision-Maker
Type tells you how to engage the world. Authority tells you how to make a correct decision in the moment. It ranges from the instant gut response of the Sacral, to the emotional clarity of the Solar Plexus (which requires waiting through a full wave of highs and lows), to the Ego/Heart willpower, the Spleen's intuitive hit, the Mental Projector's need to talk it out, and the Reflector's lunar clarity.
Living against Authority is the shadow. Living from it is rarely dramatic — it usually just feels like a quiet "yes, this is correct" the morning after.
Profile and Incarnation Cross
Your Profile (sixteen possible, like 1/3, 4/6, 6/2) describes your role and the way you meet life. The Incarnation Cross — the four Gates surrounding your Personality and Design Suns — is the theme of this particular life. You don't need to embody it constantly; you grow into it.
Reading a Chart: A Practical Starting Order
When you sit with your own chart for the first time, read it in this order so the information doesn't overwhelm you:
1. Type and Strategy — the operating system.
2. Authority — the inner GPS.
3. Definition — how your Centers are connected (single, split, triple split, quad split, no definition). This tells you about the "bridges" or relationships you need.
4. Profile — the personality flavor.
5. Channels and defined Centers — the gifts you can rely on.
6. Open Centers — the curriculum of this life.
Living the Experiment
Ra Uru Hu famously called Human Design "the science of differentiation" — not a belief system, but a 7-year experiment of living according to Strategy and Authority and noticing what happens. The shadow path of ignoring your design often looks productive but quietly depleting. The gift path often looks slower on the outside, but is the only place where consistent satisfaction tends to live.
You don't have to memorize every Gate. You only have to honor the one body you actually have.
